Mantle
Professional Identity and the Transition from Clinical Practice
Mantle is a self-assessment for physicians who are approaching, contemplating, or navigating the transition away from clinical practice. It is designed to make visible the ways professional identity is organized — and what that organization may mean for the transition ahead.
- 1Work Salience Configuration
The relative investment in clinical work versus other identity-sustaining domains of life. - 2Role-Identity Fusion
Whether a self is available to you that can survive the removal of the physician role. - 3Covenant Withdrawal
The moral and relational weight you carry in relation to leaving the profession. - 4Generative Significance
How you anticipate the durability of what you contributed to medicine.
For each statement, choose the response that best reflects your current experience — not how you think you should feel, or how you would like to feel, but how you actually recognize yourself in the statement. There are no right answers. Plan for about 10 minutes.
Your responses are not collected in any way that identifies you. Answers may be logged anonymously — with no demographic information and no way to connect them back to you — to help validate and improve this instrument over time.

A map of your current interior landscape.
The two rings mark the boundaries between Low (0–8), Medium (9–16), and High (17–24) bands on each domain.
Mantle measures four dimensions of professional identity relevant to the transition from clinical practice. Each domain is scored independently on a 0–24 scale, grouped into Low, Medium, and High bands. The bands are descriptive, not evaluative — no band represents a deficit or an ideal.
This is a map, not a readiness checklist. It reports how your professional identity is currently organized, and what that organization may mean as you approach the transition ahead.
